The Navy SEALs are America's elite, and to a point, they've transcended the regular ranks of soldiers to become pop culture icons. It's the dream team.

They stand for everything awesome about America's fighting powers, and it's notoriously difficult to pass the basic Navy SEAL requirements because of the sheer amount of pressure put on them during training.

We all know that the Navy SEALs are meant to stand for freedom, American power, and keeping people in our country safe. They stand for success in every mission life has to throw at them. However, that's just the philosophical ends of things.

As popular and as well-known as this elite fighting force is, if you ask most people what the "SEAL" part of Navy SEAL stands for, they won't be able to tell you. So, what does 'Navy SEAL' stand for? The answer may surprise you...

What does 'Navy SEAL' stand for?

The question of "What does 'Navy SEAL' stand for?" is actually a fairly easy one to answer. The acronym isn't actually as fancy as you'd expect it to be.

Navy SEAL stands for the Navy SEa, Air, and Land crew. In other words, SEAL is a better-sounding acronym that alludes to the fact that they're the country's only all-terrain fighting crew.

Every Navy SEAL has to undergo training in air, land, and sea combat in order to join SEAL ranks. This means that every member of the team can perform equally well in all three terrains — and that's what separates them from every single other fighting force the country has.

Here's a fun fact about the SEAL acronym...

One of the reasons why the SEAL acronym throws people for a loop is the "E" in SEAL. You might be wondering why people are asking, "What does 'Navy SEAL' stand for?" rather than "What does 'Navy SAL' stand for?" After all, they could have just been called the Navy SALs, too.

Believe it or not, military brass actually chose the acronym "SEAL" because the "SE" is actually pronounced out loud — like "sea." So, it was a pretty simple acronym.

Besides, SEAL sounds a lot better than calling in the Navy SALs, don't you think?
